Eu Regulation On Deforestation

New EU Law Makes Deforestation-Free Products a European Priority

What does this mean?

Following recent EU Parliament and Council approval, the new Regulation EU. Regulation EU 2023 enters into force. It’s an important new tool in the fight against climate change and biodiversity loss because it:
  • Promotes the consumption of deforestation-free products
  • Reduces the EUs impact on global deforestation and forest degradation
  • Requires companies to prove their products are deforestation-free

    When does it start?

The EUDR is binding and enforceable EU law, so it will start to apply on 30 December 2024. Deforestation-free supply chains are key to the European Green Deal, the EU’s roadmap to becoming a climate-neutral bloc by 2050. The EU is also aiming to cut emissions by 55% by 2030.

    Why is this important?

Deforestation is one of the main drivers of climate change and biodiversity loss. It destroys wildlife habitats, contributes to soil erosion, and releases greenhouse gases. The new EU law will help to protect forests by driving demand for deforestation-free products. It will also help to ensure that EU companies are not contributing to deforestation.

    What's Next?

The new law is a major step forward in the fight against climate change and biodiversity loss. It will help to protect forests and ensure that EU companies are not contributing to deforestation. The law will also help to create a level playing field for businesses that are already committed to deforestation-free supply chains. The EU is playing a leading role in the fight against deforestation and the EUDR proves it. Hopefully, it will inspire other countries to adopt similar laws.
