Rory McIlroy Wins 2014 Open Championship

Rory McIlroy dominated the 2014 Open at Royal Liverpool and deservedly became Champion Golfer of the Year for the first time. He won his first Claret Jug with a wire to wire victory edging out Sergio Garcia and Rickie Fowler by two shots on a thrilling final day at Royal.

McIlroy began the day with a 3-shot lead however playing partner Garcia cut that down with an early birdie and followed it up with two more to move alongside the leader. A stunning bunker shot to 4 feet at the 10th helped McIlroy reclaim the lead but the Spaniard refused to go away and birdied the 12th and 13th to move ahead once more.

McIlroy immediately responded with a birdie of his own and then the lead changed hands once more at the par-5 16th, with Garcia picking up a shot and McIlroy dropping one.

A brilliant approach to the par-3 17th set up a birdie for McIlroy and with Garcia finding the bunker off the tee, the Northern Irishman headed to the last with a 1-shot advantage.

Garcia was unable to make a birdie at the last and when McIlroy safely 2-putted for par he had claimed a famous victory and become the first Northern Irish winner of the Open since Fred Daly in 1995
